Closing the Barn Door

The next pattern in our Block of the Month series is the Hole in the Barn Door. This particular block is known by many other names,  the most common being Churn Dash.

Like many of our blocks, it originated in the early 1800’s. Another nine-patch variation, this block is a wonderful basic pattern for quilters to master. The center block in Marsha’s sample is made with our background fabric, but by reversing the scheme, the block could contain a feature print. The central block could also feature an applique or other embellishment. No doubt this is why  it’s also called Picture Frame!

The Quilt Index–Quilts in the collection featuring Barn Door block.  The Quilt Index is the online library featuring quilts from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Ky. This is a wonderful resource for quilters, and a great way to see some of the quilts in the Museum’s collection, if you can’t travel there in person.

Happy Stitching!
